Telepathine Chemistry

A careful introduction to harmine as a β-carboline, its related compounds, fluorescence, and the limits of appearance-based identification.

Harmine is an aromatic, nitrogen-containing β-carboline alkaloid. “Telepathine” is a historical synonym, not a second molecule. Modern chemical databases distinguish harmine from close relatives through structure and identifiers rather than color, plant origin, or seller terminology.

A family resemblance

Harmine, harmaline, and tetrahydroharmine share a β-carboline framework but differ in hydrogenation and electronic structure. Those differences influence spectra and pharmacology. “Harmala alkaloids” is a broader category, not a guarantee that any one compound or proportion is present.

Why the cyan glow appears

Harmine can absorb ultraviolet light and emit visible fluorescence. Acidity, solvent, concentration, and protonation state can change that emission. What a chemical claim needs

A credible identity or purity claim should point to fit-for-purpose analysis, reference standards, a named laboratory, a date, and a lot number that matches the material. “Natural,” “UV active,” or “high purity” does not provide that chain of evidence.
